Pritzker Endorsed
Illinois Education Association endorses Gov. J.B. Pritzker for reelection, citing his education policies

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has received a key endorsement from the Illinois Education Association, the state's largest union, for his education policies. The endorsement, announced on Monday, marks the third time the IEA has endorsed Pritzker for governor. The IEA represents more than 135,000 teachers, professors, and support staff statewide.
Education Policies
The IEA's endorsement comes as two closely watched education issues loom over the final months of Pritzker's second term. According to IEA president Karl Goeke, Pritzker's policies on minimum teacher salary raises, preventing book bans, and restricting cellphones in schools have earned him the endorsement. Goeke stated that Pritzker is on the right side of history, which means a better future for public education in Illinois.
Upcoming Challenges
One of the issues facing Pritzker is whether Illinois will opt into the Trump administration's federal tax credit scholarship program by the end of the year. The program allows individuals to donate up to $1,700 to specific education nonprofits and be reimbursed by the federal government. So far, only Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has opted his state into the program, although a handful of other Democratic governors have said they intend to opt in.
Budget Deficit
The other problem facing Pritzker is how to respond to the Chicago Board of Education's demand for $150 million additional state dollars to fill the district's budget deficit during the upcoming veto session. The Chicago Board of Education voted to pass a budget that assumes it will receive that funding last month, but the request faces an uphill battle to get approval from state lawmakers and Pritzker. The Illinois Federation of Teachers, the other statewide teachers union, has yet to make an endorsement in the race.
The source of this information is an article by The 74, which reports on education issues. According to the article, Pritzker's record on Illinois schools could wind up on the national stage, as he is reportedly a possible contender in the 2028 presidential race. Pritzker is facing off against Darren Bailey, a former Republican state lawmaker, in his bid for reelection. The two candidates previously faced off in 2022, when Pritzker handily defeated Bailey to win his second term as governor. The Chicago Tribune has reported that Pritzker was wary of the federal tax credit scholarship program earlier this year, according to text messages obtained by the newspaper.
