The rapid rise of dyslexia in public discourse reflects a long-overdue shift in education, with increased awareness helping to dispel harmful myths and prompt schools to take literacy instruction more seriously. However, the urgency of the issue is highlighted by the fact that only 31% of fourth graders performed at or above the proficient level in reading, while 40% scored below the basic level.

The Science of Reading has transformed what educators know about teaching children to read, with a focus on explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, morphology, fluency, language comprehension, and knowledge building. However, the challenge now is one of implementation, with a gap between the knowledge of how to teach reading and the actual practice in schools.

The Dyslexia Industrial Complex

The implementation gap has given rise to what is referred to as the dyslexia industrial complex, a rapidly expanding ecosystem of evaluations, tutoring, advocacy organizations, curriculum publishers, professional development, certification programs, legislation, and private intervention. While this ecosystem has transformed lives, it also reveals an uncomfortable truth: public education has become increasingly dependent on external systems to provide what should be coherent, evidence-based literacy instruction within schools.

Implementing the Science of Reading

The next phase of literacy reform is not about discovering new science, but about implementing the science that already exists. This requires a three-legged stool approach, with research, professional learning, and high-quality, aligned instructional materials. However, too often, educators are expected to bridge the gap between their training and the materials they are given, with instructional materials grounded in different instructional philosophies. Instead, districts should prioritize interventions that complement their core literacy framework, and publishers should provide transparent alignment charts to show how their materials connect to widely adopted core curricula, intervention programs, and assessments.

Districts face an overwhelming marketplace of literacy programs, intervention products, tutoring services, and professional development offerings, with not all evidence claims being created equal. The following table highlights the need for coherent literacy systems:
