A 2024 UK study found that only about 20% of teachers reported strong familiarity with dyscalculia, with most of that knowledge concentrated among special education teachers rather than general educators. Dyscalculia is more than just difficulty with math-it involves severe and persistent challenges in processing numbers, distinct from intellectual disabilities or poor instruction. The CRPE describes it as one of the most common learning disabilities, affecting 3% to 7% of children, adolescents, and adults, according to a 2019 National Institutes of Health estimate. Up to 60% of students with dyscalculia also have co-occurring conditions, such as dyslexia or ADHD. ## Policy Gaps and Screening Mandates While some states, like North Carolina and West Virginia, mention dyscalculia in recent legislation, none require screening or diagnosis. A few states-Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Rhode Island-have proposed or enacted universal dyscalculia screening for younger students. However, most states with math screening policies focus on general math difficulties rather than dyscalculia specifically, leaving districts to determine their own approaches. The CRPE brief argues that relying on achievement data alone fails to identify the root causes of math struggles or whether they stem from a learning disability. Instead, districts should implement a structured identification process, starting with universal screening to flag at-risk students. This should be followed by diagnostic assessments that examine how students process numbers, not just their performance on standard tests. Before diagnosing dyscalculia, districts should also rule out other potential explanations for persistent difficulties and conduct an infrastructure audit to ensure proper support systems are in place. ## Recommendations for Schools To better support students with dyscalculia, the brief recommends establishing clear, school-wide referral protocols for math-related concerns. Teachers should know exactly what steps to take when a student shows persistent math difficulties, similar to protocols for reading challenges. The report emphasizes the need for proactive measures to prevent dyscalculia from going unnoticed and untreated, ensuring that affected students receive the help they need to succeed.
